You can transfer files such as music, photos, videos, documents and etc. between your Mac (running Mac OS X 10.5 or later) and your Xiaomi device using the Android File Transfer application.

i. Installing Android File Transfer

1. Visit https://www.android.com/filetransfer/ in any browser (for example, Apple Safari) on your Mac.
2. Click Download Now.
3. When the download completes, double-click androidfiletransfer.dmg.
4. In the Installer window, drag Android File Transfer to Applications.
5. After dragging Android File Transfer to the Applications folder, hold down the control key while clicking in the window and select Eject “Android File Transfer” from the menu. You can also delete the DMG file by moving it to the Trash.
6. You can add Android File Transfer to your dock for quick and easy access. Just open your Applications folder and drag Android File Transfer to the dock.

ii. Connecting a Xiaomi phone to a Mac

1. Connect your Xiaomi phone to your Mac using the provided USB cable.
2. If your Xiaomi phone is secured by PIN/Password/Pattern or any other screen locks, unlock it.
3. On your Mac, launch Android File Transfer.
4. Now, you should see the files and folders of your Xiaomi device in the Android File Transfer window.
5. If your Xiaomi device has an external SD card storage, you’ll see the SD card and Phone storage tabs which let you switch between these 2 storage.

iii. Transferring files from a Xiaomi phone to a Mac

1. Drag one or more files from the Android File Transfer window to your Mac.

1. Drag one or more files from your Mac to the Android File Transfer window.

v. Creating a new folder on a Xiaomi phone

1. From the Android File Transfer window, click the New Folder icon in the upper right corner.

vi. Delete files or folders from the Xiaomi device

1. Select one or more files or folders in the Android File Transfer window.
2. Right click and then select Delete.
3. Select Delete to confirm.

Note: The steps here were written for a Xiaomi device running MIUI V5. If you’re having a different version of MIUI, there’s a possibility that the steps and screenshots will be different.

If you wish to transfer files between your Xiaomi device and a Mac computer wirelessly, follow these steps:

i. To enable FTP server on your Xiaomi device

1. On your Xiaomi device, open the Explorer app.
2. Tap FTP at the bottom of the screen.
3. Click Start server. You’ll now see the FTP server address that you need to use it for the client connections. Tip: If you wish to be slightly more secured, you can tap Settings to set the client connection username & password.

ii. Connect using the native FTP client

1. From your Mac desktop or Finder, hit Command + K to open the Connect to server window
2. Enter the FTP server address that you see on your Xiaomi device in the Server address field, and then hit Connect. Note: Enter the username and password if need be.
3. Now, you can drag and drop files or folders from your Xiaomi device to your computer.

Note: Using the native FTP client, you can only copy files from the FTP server, in this case your Xiaomi device, to your Mac computer, but not in the reverse order.

iii. Connect using a 3rd party FTP client

There are quite a number of free FTP clients for your FTP needs. For this tutorial, I’m using FileZilla as an example.

1. On your Mac, download and install the FileZilla FTP client.
2. Launch the FileZilla app, enter the IP address and port number, then hit Quickconnect. Note: Enter the username and password if need be.
3. When the FTP client is connected, you’ll see the folders of your Xiaomi device listed on the Remote site(Right). The Local site (Left) shows the folders on your Mac computer.
4. Now, you can navigate to the directory/folder that you want to upload or download the files on both the local and remote sites.
5. To transfer files, you can drag and drop the files/folders between the local and remote sites.
